Why Training Changes After 40
Something shifts when you hit your 40s. The workouts that used to energize you now leave your joints aching. Recovery takes longer. You notice stiffness in the morning that wasn't there before.
This isn't just in your head. Research shows that adults begin experiencing muscle loss, reduced cartilage, and decreased tendon elasticity starting in their mid-40s. Without the right approach, these changes can lead to injury, chronic pain, and a gradual retreat from physical activity.
The problem isn't that you're getting older. The problem is that most gyms and trainers still prescribe workouts designed for 25-year-olds. High-impact bootcamps, heavy barbell work without proper progression, and crowded classes where no one watches your form.
At TSquared, we built our entire program around what your body actually needs after 40. Not what worked in your 20s. Not what some fitness influencer promotes online. A proven system that builds strength while protecting the joints you'll need for the next 40 years.

What Makes Our Over-40 Training Different

Gravity Training System
Our Gravity Training System uses your own bodyweight on an adjustable incline, providing resistance that builds muscle without stressing your joints. This equipment isn't found in typical Vancouver gyms. It was designed specifically for low-impact strength training that older adults can progress with safely.

Small Groups, Maximum Attention
Every session caps at 5 people maximum. Compare that to the 15-30 participants crammed into most fitness classes. With a smaller group, Troy watches every movement, corrects your form in real-time, and ensures you're training safely. No getting lost in a crowd.

20+ Years Working With Adults 40+
Troy Tyrell has spent over two decades helping adults over 40 rebuild strength and move pain-free. His expertise in mobility, posture correction, and injury recovery means you're working with someone who understands exactly what your body needs at this stage of life.

The Gravity Training Advantage for Adults Over 40
Most personal training relies on free weights, machines, or high-impact bodyweight exercises. While effective for younger clients, these methods create unnecessary stress on aging joints. The Gravity Training System takes a fundamentally different approach.
Using Total Gym equipment, you train on an adjustable incline that lets you control exactly how much resistance your body handles. Starting at a lower angle reduces the load, making exercises accessible even if you're dealing with knee issues, back pain, or recovering from injury. As you get stronger, increasing the incline progressively builds muscle and bone density.
How Gravity Training Protects Your Joints:
- Reduces compression forces on knees, hips, and spine compared to standing exercises
- Allows multi-plane movement that mimics natural body mechanics
- Provides constant resistance throughout the entire range of motion
- Enables controlled progression without sudden load increases that cause injury
- Supports proper alignment so your muscles do the work, not your joints
This system is particularly valuable for adults managing arthritis, previous injuries, or general joint sensitivity. Many clients report feeling stronger within weeks while experiencing less pain than they did with traditional workouts.

What to Expect in Your First Session

Step 1: Movement Assessment
Your first visit begins with a comprehensive movement assessment. Troy evaluates your current mobility, identifies any restrictions or pain points, and notes areas that need attention. This isn't a rushed 5-minute checklist. It's a thorough evaluation that shapes your entire program.

Step 2: Introduction to Gravity Training
You'll learn the fundamentals of Gravity Training with hands-on instruction. We start at an intensity level appropriate for your current fitness, demonstrating proper form and technique. Most clients are surprised by how good the movement feels on their joints.

Step 3: Personalized Program Design
Based on your assessment and goals, Troy creates a training plan tailored specifically to you. Whether you're focused on building strength, improving mobility, losing weight, or all three, your program addresses what you need most.

Step 4: Ongoing Progression
As you get stronger, your program evolves. Resistance increases gradually, movements become more challenging, and you continue making measurable progress. Most clients notice improved strength, better posture, and reduced pain within the first few weeks.

What Vancouver Beginners Say About Training with Us
Personal Training Reviews from Google | 85 Reviews 4.9 Avg Rating
I started seeing Troy 8 months ago after not working out regularly for years. Since then, I have noticed I feel stronger, have more energy and my fitness has returned. Troy pushes you during your workouts in the best way and makes them enjoyable. I wish I discovered these classes earlier!
The gravity training is high intensity but low impact. I was suffering from a lower back injury and had trouble with that so many times when doing workouts alone. That hasn't happened since I attend these workouts and my lower back and core are stronger now. It is also helping a lot with balance.
Troy is an excellent and professional personal trainer who has really helped me work toward my fitness goals. He's both kind and strict, making each session a perfect balance of fun and effectiveness. I've enjoyed the workouts so much that my friend has also joined his group sessions.

Common Questions About Training After 40
Is personal training safe if I have joint problems or arthritis
Yes, our Gravity Training System is specifically designed to be joint-friendly. The adjustable incline reduces compression on knees, hips, and spine while still building the muscle strength that actually protects your joints. Many clients with osteoarthritis, previous injuries, or chronic pain find they can train comfortably here when other gyms caused flare-ups.
I haven't exercised in years. Will I be able to keep up
Absolutely. We work with adults at every fitness level, including those returning to exercise after decades away. Your program starts at an intensity appropriate for where you are right now and progresses at a pace that challenges you without overwhelming you. There's no competition with other participants and no pressure to perform beyond your current ability.
How much does personal training cost in Vancouver
One-on-one personal training in Vancouver typically ranges from $80-150 per session. Our small group training sessions (maximum 5 people) offer expert coaching at $40-50 per session, making quality personal training accessible without the premium price tag of private sessions. We believe you shouldn't have to choose between affordable and effective.
What results can I expect from training
Most clients notice improved posture, increased energy, and better mobility within the first few weeks. Measurable strength gains typically appear within 6-8 weeks of consistent training. Many clients also report reduced joint pain, better balance, and improved sleep quality as they build functional fitness.
How often should adults over 40 strength train
For most adults over 40, 2-3 strength training sessions per week provides optimal results while allowing adequate recovery. Research shows that adults can continue building muscle at any age with consistent training. We help you find a schedule that fits your lifestyle and produces steady progress.
What should I wear to my first session
Comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely. Athletic shoes with good support. No special equipment needed, we provide everything for your workout. Just bring water and a positive attitude.
Is the first session really free
Yes, your introductory session is completely complimentary with no obligation. It includes a movement assessment, introduction to Gravity Training, and discussion of your goals. We want you to experience the difference before committing to anything.
What makes Gravity Training different from regular weight training
Gravity Training uses your bodyweight on an adjustable incline rather than external weights. This approach provides resistance throughout the full range of motion while reducing joint stress. You can achieve similar muscle-building benefits to traditional weight training with significantly less risk of injury, making it ideal for adults over 40 who need to protect their joints while building strength.
