Turning 40 isn't a slowdown. It's a signal to train smarter. Many men in Vancouver notice their old gym routines stop delivering: joints ache after workouts, recovery takes longer, and the weight around the middle doesn't move the way it used to. Small group fitness for men 40+ at TSquared is built for exactly that stage, with coached, joint-friendly strength training in groups of no more than 4.

This guide explains what changes after 40, what the research says about strength training and long-term health, and how a small group program fits into a busy downtown schedule.

What Changes After 40

Muscle loss starts earlier than most men expect. According to UCLA Health (2026), adults lose roughly 3 to 8 percent of their muscle mass per decade between ages 30 and 50, and the rate climbs to 5 to 10 percent per decade after 50. Less muscle means a slower metabolism, less strength for everyday tasks and more strain on your joints.

Other changes stack on top of that:

  • Recovery takes longer, so high-volume, high-impact workouts can leave you sore for days
  • Old injuries resurface, especially shoulders, knees and lower backs
  • Time is tighter, with work and family leaving fewer hours for training

The answer isn't to train less. It's to train in a way that builds muscle without beating up your joints.

Why Strength Training Matters for Long-Term Health

Strength training isn't just about looking fit. Large studies link it to living longer. A 2024 study in the International Journal of Epidemiology followed more than 216,000 older adults and found that doing any weight training was associated with a lower risk of death from any cause. The lowest risk was in people who combined weight training with aerobic exercise: those doing high levels of aerobic activity plus two or more hours of weight training per week had about a 27 percent lower risk than people who did neither.

The study was observational, so it shows an association rather than proof of cause, but the message lines up with Canada's activity guidelines: adults should do muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week, alongside regular aerobic exercise.

Why Small Group Training Works for Men 40+

Big classes move fast and rarely correct form. Training alone often means the same routine every week, or pushing through pain to keep up with your younger self. A small group sits in the middle:

  • Coaching on every rep. With a maximum of 4 people, Troy watches your form, adjusts your resistance and swaps exercises when something doesn't feel right.
  • Joint-friendly loading. Most of the work happens on the Gravity Training System, which uses your own body weight on an adjustable incline. You can work hard without the heavy spinal loading of barbell work.
  • Accountability. Training at set times with the same small group makes it much harder to skip.
  • Efficiency. Each session is a full 60 minutes covering strength, mobility and conditioning, so two or three sessions a week cover what most men need.

One client, Raymond, put it this way in his Google review: "I enjoy powerlifting but also prone to injury. Working with Troy, I got not only challenging workout but worked on areas I've been neglecting in my training."

What a Session Looks Like

  1. Warm-up and mobility: hips, shoulders and upper back, the areas that stiffen most from desk work.
  2. Strength work: pulling, pushing, squatting and hinging patterns on the Gravity Training System, scaled to your level.
  3. Core and conditioning: controlled, low-impact intervals that raise your heart rate without jumping or pounding.
  4. Cool-down: mobility work to help recovery between sessions.

If you're managing a specific problem like low back pain, shoulder pain or knee pain, Troy builds modifications into the same session.

Fitting Training Into a Downtown Schedule

TSquared is at 128 W Pender St #102, inside The Sun Tower, steps from Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain Station and about a 10-minute walk from Waterfront Station. Sessions run Monday to Thursday from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Friday from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Saturday from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM, so early-morning, lunch-hour and after-work times are all available. There are private changing areas, so you can come straight from the office.

Pricing

Small group sessions are $40 each on a 10-session package or $50 for a single session. If you'd rather start one-on-one, private training is $90 per session on a 10-session package or $120 for a single session. Packages are valid for 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

I haven't trained in years. Is that a problem?

No. Most of our clients start with no strength training experience. Your first sessions focus on learning the movements and finding the right starting resistance.

How often should men over 40 strength train?

Two to three sessions a week works well for most men, with at least a day of rest between hard sessions for recovery. Canada's guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity at least twice a week.

Will this help with weight loss?

Building muscle supports a healthier metabolism, and combining strength work with aerobic activity and good nutrition is the most reliable approach. Our weight loss training page explains how we approach it.
