You Belong Here Even If You've Never Worked Out Before

Walking into a fitness class for the first time can feel overwhelming. Maybe you've imagined a room full of people who seem to know exactly what they're doing while you struggle to keep up. That fear is more common than you think, and it's exactly why TSquared exists.

Our beginner group training was built for adults who don't feel comfortable in traditional gyms. Most of our clients are in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, starting exercise for the first time in decades or sometimes ever. You won't find competitive athletes here. You'll find downtown Vancouver professionals, retirees from Coal Harbour, and busy parents from Yaletown who all started exactly where you are now.

Troy Tyrell, our head coach with over 20 years of experience, has helped hundreds of complete beginners build strength and confidence. He understands that starting later in life requires a different approach, one that respects your body's current state while progressively building your capabilities.

Why Small Groups Work Better for Beginners

Small Group Training Vancouver

Maximum 5 People Per Session

While most fitness classes pack 15-30 people into a room, our sessions never exceed 5 participants. This means Troy sees every movement, catches every form issue, and knows when to push you or when to pull back. You're never invisible in the crowd.

Everyone Starts Somewhere

Every person in your group is either a beginner or was one recently. There's no pressure to keep up with someone who's been training for years. The atmosphere is supportive, not competitive, and you'll often find yourself encouraging others just as they encourage you.

Modifications for Every Exercise

No two bodies are the same, especially for adults over 40. If an exercise doesn't work for you because of a bad knee, stiff shoulder, or previous injury, Troy adjusts it on the spot. You do what your body can handle while still getting an effective workout.

What Happens in Your First Beginner Session

Starting something new is easier when you know exactly what to expect. Here's what your first beginner group training session looks like at TSquared.

1

Arrive and Meet Your Group

You'll arrive at our private studio inside the Sandman Hotel at 180 W Georgia Street in downtown Vancouver, just steps from the Stadium-Chinatown SkyTrain station. No crowded lobby or intimidating gym floor, just a welcoming space where Troy introduces you to the small group you'll be training with.

2

Learn the Equipment

We use the Gravity Training System, which is unlike anything you've seen in traditional gyms. It uses adjustable inclines and your own body weight rather than heavy machines or free weights. Troy demonstrates each piece of equipment and shows you how to adjust resistance based on your comfort level.

3

Start with Foundational Movements

Your first session focuses on basic movement patterns like squats, rows, and presses. Nothing complicated, nothing jarring. Troy guides you through each exercise, correcting form and answering questions as you go. The pace is controlled, giving you time to understand each movement before progressing.

4

Cool Down and Next Steps

Sessions end with gentle stretching and a brief check-in. Troy discusses what you felt, what challenged you, and what to expect as you continue. Most beginners report feeling accomplished rather than exhausted after their first session.

Built for Adults Starting Over 40

Starting fitness after 40 isn't the same as starting at 25. Your body has different needs, different limitations, and different goals. At TSquared, we've spent over two decades working specifically with adults in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond.

The Gravity Training System we use is inherently low-impact. There's no jumping, no sudden movements, no stress on joints that have seen decades of use. Instead, resistance comes from adjustable inclines that let you control exactly how challenging each exercise feels. Many clients with knee pain, hip issues, or previous injuries find they can exercise pain-free for the first time in years.

Our approach prioritizes mobility alongside strength. You won't just get stronger. You'll move better. Clients regularly report improvements in posture, balance, and everyday activities like climbing stairs, carrying groceries, or playing with grandchildren.

Frequently Asked Questions About Beginner Group Training

What if I can't keep up with the rest of the group?

Our groups are specifically designed so everyone can work at their own pace. Since we cap sessions at 5 people, Troy can adjust exercises for each individual. If someone needs a modified version or extra rest, they get it without slowing down or disrupting others. Every participant uses their own Total Gym station, so you're not competing for equipment or trying to match someone else's speed.

I haven't exercised in 20 years. Is that a problem?

Not at all. Many of our clients come to us after decades away from fitness. The Gravity Training System is perfect for deconditioned adults because it's completely adjustable. You start at whatever level your body can handle today, and we progress from there. Some clients begin with just 10-15 minutes of activity and build up over weeks.

How is this different from a bootcamp or HIIT class?

Bootcamp and HIIT classes are designed for intensity, often with rapid movements, jumping, and competitive energy. Our beginner group training is the opposite. Movements are controlled, the pace allows for learning, and there's no pressure to "push through" pain or discomfort. We build strength progressively while protecting your joints.

What should I wear to my first session?

Comfortable workout clothes and clean athletic shoes are all you need. We provide towels and water. There's no dress code beyond being able to move freely. Most of our clients wear simple leggings or athletic pants and a t-shirt.

How much does beginner group training cost in Vancouver?

Our group training sessions range from $40-50 per session depending on the package you choose. This is significantly more affordable than one-on-one personal training ($80-2000/hour in Vancouver) while still providing personalized attention thanks to our small group sizes.

Can I bring a friend or partner?

Absolutely. Many clients start their fitness journey with a spouse, partner, or friend. Having someone you know in the group can ease first-session nerves. Just let us know when you book so we can coordinate scheduling.

What results can beginners expect?

Most clients notice improvements within the first few weeks. Early changes include better energy levels, improved posture, and increased confidence. Physical changes like strength gains and muscle tone typically become visible within 6-12 weeks of consistent training. We focus on sustainable progress rather than dramatic short-term results.

What if I have an injury or chronic condition?

Many of our clients train with us specifically because they have conditions like arthritis, past joint replacements, or chronic pain. Troy adapts every exercise to accommodate your situation. We recommend consulting your doctor before starting any exercise program, but we've successfully trained clients with a wide range of limitations.

I tried three different Vancouver gyms with classes of 20+ people where I felt invisible and lost. At TSquared, Troy knows my name, remembers my shoulder issue from our first conversation, and adjusts exercises specifically for me every single session. I've gained more strength in 3 months than I did in years at traditional gyms.

Going through perimenopause made me feel like my body was betraying me—weight gain, fatigue, everything hurt. Troy's approach addresses exactly what women over 40 need without the high-impact torture of bootcamp classes. The small group gives me accountability to show up even when motivation is low. Down 2 dress sizes and finally sleeping through the night.

The Gravity Training equipment changed everything for me. I have arthritis in both knees that makes traditional squats and lunges painful. Troy found ways to build leg strength without aggravating my joints. After 6 months, I'm hiking local trails again—something I thought I'd lost forever. The small group format means I get corrections every session, not just when the instructor happens to walk past
